Spain Busts Major Manga Piracy Network as Crypto Cold Wallets Surface in Unlikely Crime

Spanish police raided a major manga piracy site in Almería, arresting 3 suspects and seizing €400K in crypto stored in hidden cold wallets after a decade long operation.

Introduction

In Spain, law enforcement has made a strange discovery where digital piracy meets crypto when they seized two crypto cold wallets during what was claimed to be the largest Spanish language illegal manga website raid. Such a piece of work showcases another emerging pattern that crypto tools are no longer just part of traditional financial crime, but more deeply integrated with all sorts of criminal activity.

The Almería Raid and Arrests

Police in Almeria undertook a specific operation that led to three arrests of and identification of three suspects linked to the piracy network. The Spanish Ministry of Interior reported that “the group ran a website, offering free downloads of pirated manga, since 2014.”

The authorities claimed that the platform was the largest of its kind in the Spanish language, with a huge set of users over the years. The investigation, which had started in June 2025 after complaints from copyright owners, revealed a sophisticated operation generating revenue from the distribution of illicit material.

A Hidden Cache of Crypto Assets

One of the most surprising finds of the raid was the two cold wallets that held crypto, which had a value of approximately EUR400,000. More surprising than the value of the crypto was where the wallet had been hidden. It was located in a thermometer which had been placed in the wall, indicating it was in the knowledge of the thief to hide the wallet.

Crypto cold wallets are generally used for security purposes as they keep private keys off-line. Their use here indicates a trend of non crypto native criminals wanting to make greater use of blockchain based assets as a means of concealing value.

But it remains to be seen whether authorities could unlock them. Without the private keys or recovery words, this crypto may forever be stuck.

A Decade Long Piracy Operation

The illegal manga platform had been online for more than 10 years and gained more than EUR4 million in revenues mostly from advertisings. The website was attracting masses of users by providing free access to protected works.

This resembles to another common pattern in digital piracy, an operation based on the volume of traffic that it generated rather than subscription fees paid. The longevity of the platform indicates the technical sophistication as well an absence ofpressure to crack down early.

Crypto Beyond Financial Crime

This case highlights a major change in how we are seeing the use of crypto in criminal activity. Ever since crypto was first recognized for being involved with dark web markets, ransomware or scams, we are now seeing it in intellectual property cases and content piracy case.

The use of cold wallets in this context reflects several advantages:

Discreet storage:Offline wallets are under the radar – they are more difficult to detect without physical access

Resistance to seizure: Unauthorized withdrawal of the funds through use of secured information.

Global liquidity means liquid assets can be transferred or converted globally with minimal effort;

To investigators, this is a new problem. If computers are seized, there are other challenges; getting and maintaining access to the funds present a significant technical and legal obstacle.

Legal and Regulatory Implications

The use of a cryptocurrency in such a non traditional cybercrime case could also affect the perspective of the regulators and law enforcement agencies on digital assets. They may advocate for:

Expanded forensic analytics access to encrypted wallets to include decryption of wallet contents.

More effective collaboration with blockchain analytics companies

Reflect updated legal frameworks that tackle crypto across a number of different criminal contexts

And at the same time this poses problems related to privacy and punishment versus individual rights.

Broader Industry Impact

As a victory for the manga and publishing industry, the takedown is perhaps the biggest hit to date in the fight against piracy. For rights holders, piracy and unauthorized distribution sites have created a nightmare and started chipping away at their sales and rights.

This case also demonstrates that even an extended operation can be enforced against due to enforcement agencies becoming adept at following digital and monetary leads.

Conclusion

The attack on Almeria, shows us that that peninsular Spain is not only being used as a means of policing a piracy crackdown. But also illustrates just how versatile modern day crime, and as such cryptocurrency, can be. As it continues to become more and more common place, it is clear that agencies around the world will have to adapt fast.

The convergence of crypto and non financial crime is not a dystopian scenario. It‘s a present reality already transforming how illicit activity preserves value, avoids detection and ultimately gets caught.
