Geist fUSDT, also known as gUSDT, was designed as an interest-accruing token. It served as a representation of a Tether (USDT) deposit that users had placed within the Geist lending market. Essentially, holding gUSDT meant you had funds deposited and potentially earning yield within the Geist Finance protocol.
Geist Finance, the lending protocol where gUSDT was utilized, is no longer operational. The project officially announced its permanent shutdown in July 2023. This means the platform has ceased all activities, and its services, including lending and borrowing functions, are defunct.
The primary reason for Geist Finance's shutdown was the significant financial losses it incurred as a direct consequence of the Multichain exploit. This critical event severely impacted the protocol's ability to maintain its operations and financial integrity, ultimately leading to the decision to cease all activities.
The Multichain exploit caused critical issues by leading Chainlink oracles to report incorrect valuations for bridged assets. These compromised assets were trading at a substantial discount compared to their original value. This discrepancy created an unsustainable situation, making it impossible for Geist Finance to reactivate its lending services without causing substantial irrecoverable debt for holders of assets not affected by Multichain.
Geist Finance explicitly clarified that Chainlink's oracle systems "worked as they should" during the incident. The protocol placed the blame squarely on the Multichain.org exploit itself, emphasizing that Chainlink's data feeds were accurate based on the market conditions created by the exploit, rather than being the cause of the problem.
Given the permanent shutdown of the Geist Finance project, Geist fUSDT (gUSDT) is effectively defunct. The associated project is no longer operational, which means the token would likely possess little to no inherent value or market liquidity. Trading functionality for gUSDT is now considered effectively non-existent.
