What is Zenon (ZNN)?

Zenon, often referred to as the Network of Momentum, is a decentralized Layer 1 blockchain project that launched in 2019. It is designed to provide a highly scalable and secure infrastructure for the next generation of decentralized applications, known as zApps. The project is characterized by a strong cypherpunk ethos and was founded by an anonymous team, later transitioning to a community-led governance model. The core of the project is its unique dual-ledger architecture. This system combines a Directed Acyclic Graph, called the Meta-DAG, for consensus with a Block-Lattice structure for transaction data. This hybrid design allows the network to process transactions asynchronously and scale linearly as more nodes join. To secure the network, Zenon utilizes a dual consensus mechanism that incorporates both Proof of Stake and Proof of Work. The ecosystem operates using a dual-token model consisting of Zenon (ZNN) and Quasar (QSR). ZNN serves as the primary coin for network consensus, serving as collateral for validators and a medium for governance. QSR acts as the secondary utility coin used to represent transactional bandwidth. A notable feature of the network is its feeless transaction model. Users can perform transactions without cost by fusing QSR to generate Plasma, which acts as the network's fuel. Alternatively, lower-resource devices can perform a small amount of Proof of Work to process transactions if they do not hold QSR. Zenon is deeply integrated with the Bitcoin philosophy and aims to address Bitcoin scaling challenges. It seeks to serve as a reliable base for sidechains and interoperable layers, leveraging technologies like Taproot to enhance Bitcoin’s programmability. The network supports its own token standard, the Zenon Token Standard, which allows users to issue digital assets that inherit the network's native properties, such as being feeless and censorship-resistant. The network is maintained by several types of participants. Pillars are the primary validators responsible for producing blocks and securing the ledger. Sentinels function as archival nodes that store the full state of the network. The project also features a decentralized treasury and incubator called Accelerator-Z, which is managed by a decentralized autonomous organization to fund community-driven development and ecosystem growth. Overall, Zenon focuses on digital sovereignty, interoperability, and providing a scalable, equitable platform for the Web3 ecosystem. Learn more

Zenon (ZNN) FAQ

Zenon employs a dual-coin economy to separate governance and security from utility. ZNN is used for consensus, governance, and securing the network; it is required to run validators (Pillars) and is distributed as rewards. QSR acts as the "fuel" or collateral needed to spawn network infrastructure like Sentinels and Pillars. This synergy ensures long-term sustainability by requiring QSR to unlock ZNN earning potential, which prevents wealth concentration and ensures the network remains decentralized.
Zenon is often described as a Bitcoin-centric smart contract platform. Its primary goal is to provide a highly scalable, feeless environment for decentralized applications on native Bitcoin. The network is designed to leverage Bitcoin’s Proof-of-Work as a "root of trust," effectively tapping into Bitcoin's security to finalize transactions on the Zenon ledger. This interoperability allows Zenon to function as a powerful extension for the Bitcoin ecosystem.
The Network of Momentum (NoM) uses a unique dual-ledger system that combines a Block-lattice for speed with a Meta-DAG for global consensus. Instead of paying traditional gas fees common on other smart contract platforms, users "fuse" QSR to generate "Plasma." As long as a user has sufficient Plasma, their transactions are effectively free. This architecture allows the network to scale efficiently while allowing users to retain their collateral.
Pillars are the network's validators that produce blocks and vote on-chain; they require 15,000 ZNN and a QSR burn to operate. Sentinels are archival nodes that provide security links, requiring 5,000 ZNN and a QSR lock. Users who do not wish to run hardware can participate as Delegators by supporting a Pillar with any amount of ZNN to earn a share of that Pillar's rewards.
Following the philosophy of Bitcoin, Zenon was launched by an anonymous team that prioritizes development over marketing. The project is highly active and governed by the community through Accelerator-Z, an on-chain treasury. Because there is no central authority, development is funded by the community; anyone can submit a proposal to build on the network, and if the Pillars vote to approve it, the contributor is paid in ZNN and QSR.
The "Alphanet Big Bang" refers to the mainnet launch in 2021. The community is currently focused on Phase 1, which involves expanding the Zenon Token Standard (ZTS) to allow for the issuance of new assets on the network. Additionally, development is focused on extension chains (Layer-2s) that will provide compatibility with major smart contract environments and facilitate native interoperability with the Bitcoin network.
