It is created by Monerium, a financial technology company based in Iceland. Monerium holds a license as an Electronic Money Institution and is regulated by the Central Bank of Iceland, making it compliant with the European Union framework for electronic money and the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation, also known as MiCA. The primary purpose of EURe is to provide a stable digital representation of the euro that can be used seamlessly across the Web3 ecosystem. Unlike many other digital assets, EURe is considered electronic money rather than a typical cryptocurrency. It is designed to maintain a consistent value relative to the euro through a direct one-to-one backing. Every token in circulation is supported by high-quality liquid assets or funds held in segregated bank accounts that are protected and separate from the company's own assets. A standout feature of the project is the integration of traditional banking with blockchain technology. Monerium provides users with a dedicated International Bank Account Number, or IBAN, that is linked directly to their blockchain wallet. This allows for a simplified minting and redemption process. When a user sends euros from a standard bank account to their Monerium IBAN via the SEPA network, the system automatically mints an equivalent amount of EURe tokens and delivers them to the user's connected wallet. Conversely, when tokens are sent back to the issuer, they are burned, and the corresponding amount of fiat currency is transferred to a specified bank account. EURe is issued on several major blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Polygon, Gnosis Chain, and Noble. It follows standard token formats such as ERC-20, which ensures compatibility with a wide range of decentralized applications, digital wallets, and decentralized finance protocols. The project is used for various applications, including cross-border payments, peer-to-peer transfers, and business settlements such as automated payroll or business-to-business transactions. It also serves as a source of regulated liquidity within the decentralized finance sector, enabling users to interact with on-chain services using a digital asset that carries the legal protections of European electronic money regulations. By bridging the gap between traditional fiat systems and distributed ledger technology, EURe aims to offer a secure and transparent way to move value globally without the need for traditional intermediaries or centralized exchanges.
