Shen is a digital token that serves as the reserve coin for Djed, which is a decentralized algorithmic stablecoin protocol built on the Cardano blockchain. The project was developed through a collaboration between the blockchain research and development firm Input Output Global and the fintech platform COTI. The primary purpose of Shen is to ensure the stability and overcollateralization of the Djed stablecoin. In the Djed ecosystem, the stablecoin is backed by Cardano's native asset, ADA. However, because the value of ADA can fluctuate, Shen acts as a protective layer or reserve. It is designed to absorb market volatility by acting as a buffer, helping to maintain the necessary reserve ratio required for the stablecoin to stay pegged to its target value. The protocol typically aims for a high reserve ratio, often between four hundred and eight hundred percent, to ensure there is always significantly more collateral in the system than the total value of stablecoins in circulation. Holders of Shen play a critical role in the ecosystem by providing the liquidity needed to maintain this stability. In exchange for providing this collateral and taking on the risk of price fluctuations, Shen holders are incentivized through various mechanisms. They receive a share of the transaction fees generated whenever users mint or burn the associated stablecoin. Additionally, because the reserve pool consists of ADA, Shen holders may also benefit from delegation rewards generated by the staking of that ADA within the Cardano network. Unlike the stablecoin it supports, Shen does not have a fixed value. Its value is determined by the amount of excess collateral in the reserve pool. The smart contract governing the protocol manages the minting and burning of Shen tokens based on the current reserve ratio to prevent the system from becoming undercollateralized or excessively overcollateralized. For example, if the reserve ratio falls below a certain threshold, the contract may restrict the burning of Shen to protect the stablecoin's backing. The name Shen is derived from an ancient Egyptian symbol representing symmetry, infinity, and protection, which reflects the project's goal of providing a secure and enduring financial instrument within the decentralized finance space. By separating the stability of the pegged asset from the volatility of the reserve, the project offers a specialized utility for users who wish to participate in the maintenance of the network's liquidity and stability infrastructure.
