OpenAI and Microsoft Executives Admit AI Poses a Threat to Journalism

According to newly unsealed court documents, OpenAI and Microsoft executives acknowledged that their AI tools can replace articles published by outlets such as The New York Times, and admitted that their technology poses a threat to journalism. During discovery, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella testified that conversations with chatbots have already “replaced” publishers’ websites; OpenAI senior executive Nick Turley wrote: “Our products are, to a large extent, substitutive, period.” The above was disclosed in a partially unsealed motion for summary judgment filed Thursday by news publishers. The unsealed motion also showed that Nadella testified that paywalled content should be licensed for use in AI training, and that if he had known OpenAI had scraped and trained on paywalled information, he would have “invoke[d] Microsoft’s rights to demand that OpenAI retrain its models.”
