In 2021 ThomasG.eth had around $538 million worth of cryptocurrency at its peak (a combination of ETH, Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), and DAI). However, after the crypto crash in 2022 his wallet reduced its exposure to almost nothing throughout 2022 due to broad market volatility. Following this, it had little to no activity until the end of 2025/beginning of 2026 when it saw significant activity and rebuilt a balance of around<a href="https://www.coinglass.com/pro/i/WhaleTrade" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>$19.5 million in exposure to ETH during the course of just one week (between March 14th and March 20th 2026) primarily through purchases of spot ETH, wrapped ETH (WETH), and deposit into Aave. This wallet saw at least 6 additional linked wallets contributing to the total accumulated portfolio of 19.5 million through different purchases of exposed assets leading up to the total purchase of 3 million on March 20th 2026.<h2>Who ThomasG.eth Is and Why the Timing Matters</h2>The wallet in which this investor has made trades is certainly not totally anonymous; for one thing, they have been tracked publicly via on-chain analytic firms through multiple cycles of the market using their ENS name of thomasg.eth. An investor that once had an ETH portfolio valued at $538 million at the top of the 2021 ETH bull market clearly knows from experience the cyclical patterns in the price of ETH. The investor unloaded their exposure gradually through the market decline in 2022 for a disciplined methodical de-risking rather than panic selling. Given how the investor recently re-entered the market, buying ETH at $2,100 to $2,200 at a point in time when it was selling for approximately<a href="https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/ethereum" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>56% less than its all-time high of $4,946 (August 24–25, 2025), this would appear to be the act of a more seasoned long-term investor rather than a speculative short-term trader. Analyzing the trading structure of the investor supports this conclusion; buying ETH for spot delivery is the most direct bet on the price of ETH going forward. Purchasing wrapped ETH allows them to maintain exposure while participating in DeFi. Depositing ETH into Aave allows the investor to earn yield while maintaining their on-chain ownership of their assets. All three of the methods of making these trades illustrate a desire to accumulate ETH over several years rather than attempting to make a few quick profits.<h2>Bitmine, Tom Lee, and the Bottom Call</h2>As a testament to how committed they are to Ethereum, it has recently been reported that one of the largest investors in the ETH network (ThomasG.eth) has been buying ETH at an accelerated rate and that another major investment firm (BitMine Immersion Technologies) led by Tom Lee has been doing the same. To date,<a href="https://www.theblock.co/post/393450/bitmine-immersion-buys-eth-from-ethereum-foundation" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>BitMine has acquired approximately 4.5-4.6 million ETH and has been aggressive in its acquisition. Just a few days ago, BitMine bought<a href="https://etherscan.io/tx/0xe8f57c7b04a8c7d72b7cfb48f13db8a0a1af23b76b7b7a9f19f74dc2c7b17e4e" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>5,000 ETH (~$10.2 million) directly from the Ethereum Foundation as part of an "OTC-style" transaction on-chain suggesting that the Foundation is fine being a long-term supporter of corporate treasuries. In addition to Bitmine's purchases, Tom Lee has also been very bullish on Ethereum and has backed his view with two substantial analytical frameworks. First, the DeMark Sequential analysis of ETH shows a<a href="https://www.fundstrat.com/research/ethereum-demark-sequential-bottom-march-2026" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>93% correlation between ETH price movements and equity recovery patterns in 3 different periods (1987, 2011 and now) indicating that there may be a bottom forming for ETH within the next couple of weeks. Second, the average cost basis of all ETH holders is currently just below<a href="https://insights.glassnode.com/ethereum-mvrv-realized-price-2026/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>$2,241 which aligns with historical precedent of major recoveries (in 2022/early 2025) having occurred after ETH was available at substantial discount to this level. Over ten years of history have shown Ether to be the top-performing asset with approximately 49,000% return compared to only 11,000% for Bitcoin and/or Nvidia which demonstrates the magnitude of the recent 56% price decline from the 2025 high while still being well within a long-term bullish trend.<h2>The ETF Outflows Are the Contradictory Signal</h2>Three days of consecutive withdrawals from Ethereum spot ETFs in the United States coincided with thomasg.eth building up a substantial Ethereum position. Farside Investor data showed that on March 18, there were<a href="https://farside.co.uk/ethereum-etf-flow-all-data/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>net withdrawals of $55.7 million from spot ETFs, $136.4 million on March 19, and $42 million on March 20; total net institutional withdrawals within that time frame equaled $234.1 million. Both thomasg.eth accumulating Ethereum on-chain while institutional investors were withdrawing from spot ETFs demonstrates how the ongoing conflicts in the Ethereum ecosystem are manifesting themselves. These two signals reflect two completely different types of investors in the real world and represent two completely different time frames:ETF flows reflect short-term risk management by institutional desks operating in a macroeconomic environment marked by geopolitical tensions, elevated oil prices, and a hawkish Federal Reserve. ThomasG.eth, by contrast, appears positioned for accumulation over months or years rather than weeks. A rebound in on-chain activity is being seen in March 2026 as the<a href="https://studio.glassnode.com/metrics?a=ETH&amp;m=addresses.ActiveCount" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>trailing 30-day average active Ethereum addresses has now set a new record level. Aggressive buyers have also reached a three-year high of $142 million worth of net buyer activity. The MVRV ratio is getting close to the level of prior cycles that saw gains of over 250%, demonstrating that although the macroeconomic environment may make it seem like Ethereum is deteriorating, the underlying network is solid. Whether or not this whale is getting in on the ground floor or just in time will be determined by how quickly the resolution of oil prices, interest rates, and global affairs take place before the current accumulation window closes.
