The development of Ethereum has included a continuous balancing act of scaling its network for worldwide demand and protecting both decentralization and security. As of late, Layer-Two (L2) solutions, in particular rollups, are the most popular form of establishing scalability. However, Ethereum's success in growing via L2 solutions has caused a new issue of fragmentation. The EEZ (Ethereum Economic Zone) is an innovative answer to limitations created by current exchanges. As a contribution towards the development of a single unified platform allowing all rollups on Ethereum (i.e., L2s) to be part of a common ecosystem for improved ease of interoperability, Gnosis and Zisk, working together with the Ethereum Foundation, have created the EEZ. The EEZ will enable the unification of all presently segregated multilayer networks into one comprehensive network.<h2>The Problem: A Fragmented Layer-2 Ecosystem</h2>The development roadmap of Ethereum's rollup-centric focus has resulted in a rapid rise of several L2 solutions (rollups). These solutions include Arbitrum, Optimism, zkSync, etc; providing a vast increase in transaction throughput and reduced cost per transaction compared to Layer 1 Ethereum and do so in a completely isolated environment (i.e.: fragmented).<h3>Fragmentation creates a host of inefficiencies:</h3><ol><li data-list="bullet">Liquidity fragmentation - Assets are divided among multiple blockchains reducing capital efficiencies.</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">Complex user experience - Users often need to use bridges to send money between different rollup chains, which takes time and costs a lot.</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">Duplicated infrastructure - Developers have to recreate their own applications separately on every rollup network and support them separately through independent services.</li></ol> There is limited interoperability because smart contracts on differing rollup types cannot interact with each other in real time. This causes the Ethereum ecosystem to operate more like a series of distinct economies, as opposed to being one cohesive platform, even though they do, in fact, exist together in the same technical universe.<h3>The EEZ Proposal: A Unified Economic Layer</h3>The Ethereum Economic Zone presents a structure to develop interoperability across all of these different rollups by creating a unified, interoperable ecosystem. The Ethereum Economic Zone enables:<ol><li data-list="bullet">Simultaneous execution of transactions throughout all rollups</li><li data-list="bullet">Single transactions can be executed on multiple networks</li></ol> The native protocols are interoperable, such that they can be utilized directly without bridges between them. Thus, smart contracts can call upon different smart contracts that originate from varying rollups or interact with the Ethereum Mainnet in a single transaction.<h3>Key Innovation: Synchronous Execution Across Rollups</h3>One of the most groundbreaking aspects of EEZ is its ability to support synchronous execution across different rollups.<h3>What does this mean?</h3>Currently, interacting across chains requires asynchronous processes: <ol><li data-list="ordered">Initiate a transaction on one chain</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="ordered">Wait for confirmation</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="ordered">Bridge assets or messages</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="ordered">Execute on the destination chain</li></ol><h3>With EEZ, this process becomes instantaneous and unified:</h3>Through rollups (a layer of the blockchain) executing multiple contracts simultaneously, they have an opportunity to execute all contracts at once. Rollups don't require any intermediary (i.e. bridge) to connect between the two blockchains. Rollups reduce both latency and risk. This re-introduces composability as a primary feature of Ethereum's success in the earliest stages of the platform; the ability for various applications or "building blocks" to work together.<h2>Eliminating Bridges and Reducing Risk</h2>Historically considered one of the weakest parts of the Blockchain Ecosytem, Bridges are one of the prime targets for exploits and hacks. Instead of having multiple applications deployed on each separate roll-up, each of which would require separate development, maintenance and updates, a developer can deploy a single application across all roll-ups and share the infrastructure used by each roll-up with other applications deploying on any of them. <ol><li data-list="bullet">Build once and access users across all participating rollups</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">Share liquidity pools and backend systems</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">Avoid redundant deployments and maintenance</li></ol> This would lead to a more efficient ecosystem, where innovation is not slowed down by fragmentation.<h2>Maintaining Ethereum as the Settlement Layer</h2>Despite enabling cross-rollup execution, EEZ does not replace Ethereum’s role—it reinforces it.All participating rollups would still:Complete transactions on the Ethereum blockchain Use Ethereum's secure operating basis Conform to Ethereum's long-term plan for their ecosystem This allows for an increase in transaction through-put without sacrificing trustworthiness or decentralization.<h2>Collaboration Across the Ecosystem</h2>The EEZ initiative is not being developed in isolation. It involves:Researchers in Ethereum Providers of Basic Infrastructure Protocols for Decentralized Finance (DeFi) Persons/Organizations with a Financial Stake in the Industry Participants that Contributed Early are Considering the Possibility of Interoperable Rollups Operating According to a Common Standard, Indicating a Strong Interest Within the Ecosystem. As Such, This Collaborative Effort Enhances the Chances for Adoption of the Framework and is More Likely to Align with Real-World Use Cases.<h3>Possible Effects of a New Ethereum Proof-of-Stake Protocol</h3>If the Ethereum Foundation implements its new proof-of-stake protocol, it could drastically alter the Ethererum ecosystem for the better: 1. Increase Liquidity EfficiencyBy eliminating asset silos and allowing for larger pools of liquidity with deeper depths and more access to liquidity, liquidity will be able to flow more freely. 2. Decrease User ExperienceUsers will be able to use many different protocols across rollups without having to switch networks and without having to bridge their assets. 3. Increase ComposabilityDevelopment will be able to build more composite applications that use multiple rollups together to work in conjunction with other applications. 4. Increase Pace of InnovationWith less infrastructure overhead, builders will be able to focus their time on building new products instead of worrying about managing their product deployment.<h2>Challenges and Considerations</h2>EEZ has multiple potential challenges, including: <ol><li data-list="bullet">1. Technical Complexity - Rolling up multiple independent rollups and implementing them via synchronous execution is a challenging task.</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">2. Standardization - Getting a diverse group of L2 projects to agree on how they will operate together may be hard.</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">3. Adoption - Widespread adoption will depend on the willingness of rollup developers and protocols to work with each other.</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">4. Security - New architectures need to be thoroughly tested to ensure that they do not introduce any security holes.</li></ol><h2>Conclusion</h2>One of the major issues facing Ethereum is fragmentation between its various layer-2 solutions. The Ethereum Economic Zone aims to solve this problem by creating a system that allows rollups to function together seamlessly without having to use bridges. The EEZ would have the potential to turn Ethereum into one unified economic network. If the EEZ is successful in unifying Ethereum, this would bring Ethereum back to being able to have composability, while still remaining scalable and secure; thus creating a truly decentralized, global financial infrastructure in accordance with the vision set out by Ethereum.
