<h2>Introduction</h2>In fact, guilds were once merely game communities that strategically teamed up and competed together. However, with the advent of Web3 gaming, guilds are now much more complex entities: they now range from decentralized investment vehicles managing assets worth millions of dollars to scholarship programs acting as manpower deployment services and reputation systems on blockchain for access to opportunities. With tens of millions more invested in NFT gaming and other supporting structures and tokens for gaming, Yield Guild Games the first Web3 guild is now managing a treasury with a total value of more than $3 million based on validator rewards alone. The guild began with providing loans for Axie Infinity characters to Filipino gamers during lockdowns and grew into a network now allowing hundreds of guilds to manage assets and reputations on the blockchain. This is made possible and reinforced by the basic tenet that now underlies Web3 gaming economics: once assets within such online gaming communities possess substantial monetary worth and can be proven to be owned on the blockchain, then naturally, player guilds will evolve into financially viable entities. It is no longer a matter of whether game guilds might be responsible for managing assets: It is whether they might do so without again creating power structures they once sought to eliminate.<h2>The Axie Infinity Catalyst</h2>A particular economic change triggered the emergence of Web3 gaming guilds. For one to be able to play the play-to-earn game Axie Infinity, they were required to purchase characters from NFTs at a cost ranging from $300 to $1,000. This was unaffordable for unemployed athletes from the Philippines and Venezuela during the time of the pandemic. However, this game allowed a person with skills to earn as much as $500 to $2,000 monthly, which could be life-changing for underdeveloped areas. The arbitrage here was noticed by the founder of <a href="https://www.lbank.com/price/yield-guild-games/what-is" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Yield Guild Games</a>, Gabby Dizon. In this model, <a href="https://www.lbank.com/price/yield-guild-games" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">YGG</a> bought Axie NFTs and rented them out to "scholars," with revenue split: 70% for scholars and 20% and 10% for the guild and managers respectively. In this arrangement, scholars made money with no capital outlay, the guild accumulated revenue from profits made by scholars, and for a while, all parties seemed to benefit. The model went bust. It is estimated that at the peak of the model, YGG and other similar initiatives counted hundreds of thousands of scholars across the globe. Others replicated this model. A significant amount was invested about 20% going into blockchain gaming guilds and blockchain incubators by venture capitalists altogether amounting to approximately $1.8 billion. And then Axie's economy went bust. The prices of all tokens went down drastically, scholarships being reduced from thousands to merely cents per month, and the play-to-earn model that fueled all the guilds was no longer sufficient to sustain them. The guilds were now left with overflowing finances and incredibly high investor hopes with a game economy that was declining.<h2>The Pivot: From Scholarships to Infrastructure</h2>"What do we do if play-to-earn does not work out? It was a question that survived guilds were forced to confront. The range of suggestions was broad, and the corrective direction was unmistakable: from running day-to-day operations to developing infrastructures; from managing scholarships to helping others." In September 2024, Guild Protocol was launched as the response to YGG. The Guild Protocol is the response to YGG and represents "a community initiative to empower any community with the ability to create Onchain Guilds blockchain-based organizations with transparent management and governance for membership, assets, and reputation that function more as a collection of communities than as a closed guild." It offers modules such as treasury management solutions and reputation management across multiple games. The facts are simple: while specific games may come and go with respect to popularity, the network underpinning player communities provides lasting utility and thus has inherent worth. Now, YGG can be said to be providing critical infrastructure and is no longer tied to a specific game economy with respect to its acquisition of validator rewards across multiple networks (totaling over $3 million). In similar trends, other guilds went on similar trajectories. Merit Circle invested in the necessary infrastructure and game development while Perion concentrated on community reputation-building methods. The survivors grew from operators to platforms and from participants to investors. Communities disbursed and finances depleted; without adapting, some faded out.<h2>What Guilds Actually Do Now</h2>Current Web3 gaming guilds exist as a combination of community organizations, labor recruitment agencies, and investment DAOs. The first is the management of assets. The treasury at YGG has a well-diversified portfolio including gaming NFTs, governance tokens from multiple protocols, validating positions with staking rewards, and equity/token investments in emerging gaming projects. As in a venture fund, they allocate this portfolio based on their investment strategy in the gaming industry. Reputation systems represent the new frontiers. Soulbount Tokens gifted from YGG's Guild Advancement Program reward activities such as achievement and victory at competitions and within communities. These are non-transferable tokens that form verifiable on-chain résumés showcasing one's skills within various games. The concept basically represents a door-opener and not a fresh start within a game. The reason this is important is that user acquisition is a problem for game developers. Instead of targeting actual players, game developers can approach guilds with specific criteria such as levels of FPS game experience and number of wins, and guilds essentially become pools for talent to be recruited from. The DAO framework has enabled the rise of Treasury-Holding-as-a-Service. Guild treasuries monetize assets productively: token staking turns assets into revenue, validating operations pay off, and NFT assets appreciate in value or generate revenue from leasing. Being a member of a guild indirectly gives one access to a variety of gaming assets, thus applying the treasury as an investment tool.<h2>The Power Concentration Dilemma</h2>The reality is chilling: guilds began as democratized platforms for play-to-earn investment and now function as investment funds run by core team members and token holders. As the play-to-earn economy went bust, the scholarship model that made YGG famous lending assets to players who could not afford them is now defunct. The treasury is dominated by the holders of the YGG token and the more holders there are the more influence they can exert. This is normal for a DAO and can lead away from being more meritocratic and towards being a plutocracy, leaving the scholars who created the initial treasuries with limited influence. To address this issue, the SubDAO model seeks to decentralize decision-making. While partnering with the principal DAO, game and geographic SubDAOs exercise operational independence. This decentralizes decision-making but does not really change the fact that power correlates with token distribution. The guild treasuries today are handling the management of tens of millions of dollars. However, even during bear markets, YGG showed a 20-month runway by 2026, which is indicative of well-funded operations and professionalism with management and structure shrouded in DAO speak and not merely community-driven initiatives.<h2>What This Means for Players</h2>The emergence of guilds gives rise to complex game dynamics for the individual player. On one side, guilds provide benefits that cannot be replicated: game recommendations, anti-fraud services, coordinated community rewards, reputation across multiple game platforms with potential airdrops and token distribution. However, one negative is that guilds capitalize on these benefits. Popular guilds tend to receive a majority of scholarships available. With fewer scholarships being given out, guilds can now capitalize on their networks and reputation by taking portions of quest rewards and airdrops meant for members. It is hard to determine the benefit for all parties. Issues may be raised with regard to reputation management. Having on-chain resumés that showcase gaming achievements is a great advantage. However, who is managing this process? If this is managed by YGG or any other guild with respect to the reputation system, then opportunities may be limited. Players may be locked within networks that cannot be exited.<h2>The Uncertain Future</h2>Gaming guilds represent a concept that tries to structure communities with economic incentives. Gaming guilds were more about rivalry and entertainment; on the other hand, Web3 gaming guilds aim for economic gain and riches. The social behavior and structure around gaming guilds transform from friendships and communities to partnerships and investment portfolios. Whether this is a boon to gaming communities or a blow is hard to determine.&nbsp; Guilds can and do demonstrate the ability to create stable treasuries and survive market crashes. It is clear that they can offer a service and be a vehicle for investment. However, whether such groups offer actual superior value for their members compared to more traditional alternatives is still to be seen, and whether they do any more than introduce additional middlemen to extract the now-decentralized value.&nbsp; The guilds that can offer actual benefits with sustainably funded treasuries will be the ones that succeed. At the moment, gaming guilds function more like a combination of community structures and investment funds and blockchain protocols. Additionally, they do not function purely on either the financial side or the social one. Players who participate in guilds do so while being aware that they fall between the above-mentioned lines. However, the shift from social clubs to wealth managers is now complete. Whether this is more beneficial for gamers or is merely creating more gatekeepers is yet to be determined.
