The SKR Coin, which was first introduced in January 2026 by Solana Mobile, should sound familiar to you, as Solana Mobile used the same strategy that they used back in 2023 when launching the Saga Phone. Solana Mobile's strategy in selling high value tokens to the buyer early on, creating a FOMO effect and rushing the phones to market is the same strategy they are using to launch the SKR Coin. You might wonder why anyone would buy a $1,000 phone, when that phone can be turned into a 'hot item' after the <a href="https://www.lbank.com/trade/bonk_usdt" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">BONK</a> Airdrop worth more than $10,000 dollars? The SKR Coin will have 10 billion coins and will distribute 30% of those coins to the owners of the Seeker and Saga through airdrops and will also have a governance story to it, which is used as a blueprint for acquiring customers. The SKR Coin will be used to power the staking for the 'Guardians' that will provide the dApp market and secure the devices. The true bet in recreating the virality of the Saga phone, is whether or not Solana Mobile can recreate that same success during a time when the cryptocurrency market is less 'hot', when the hype is down, and when people are more aware of the game that they are playing. <h2>What SKR Actually Is</h2> The structure of SKR underpins incentives for adoption because there will be 10 billion SKR produced (the maximum supply). 40% of these SKR will go directly to the community; 10% will go to the community treasury and 30% will be airdropped to Seeker and Saga users. 25% will be allocated to development initiatives to encourage growth and foster partnerships, 10% will go to create launch liquidity, 15% will go to provide liquidity for Solana Mobile devices, and 10% will go to Solana Labs. The allocations for the Solana Labs and Solana team will be locked for a period of 12 to 18 months, respectively. Inflation rates will be in place, with an estimated 10% inflation in Year 1; each subsequent year, the inflation rate will be decreased by 25% until Year 6, which will be estimated at 2%. With early stakeholders benefitting from an inflationary model, non-stakers will experience a decline in their SKR holdings due to newly created tokens, with high odds of losing value entirely if the market does not recover by 2026. SKR has been created as a governance token for Solana Mobile. Individuals who are "Guardians" stake their SKR in order to act as device validators, process/block app-store submissions and enforce community standard compliance. These initial Guardians are the following companies who are also partners of Solana Mobile: Helius Labs, DoubleZero, Triton One, Jito and Anza. Rewards for being a Guardian will not begin until the Guardian has unstaked for 48 hours. Marketing talks about utility for your marketing message - it protects your devices, organizes your applications and helps guide your platform; but the primary goal of this marketing message is to get users/consumers to purchase the phone before they have a chance to purchase into the ecosystem with the expectation that the value of the tokens will rise. <h2>The Saga Precedent</h2> The Knowledge of SKR involves the understanding of the release of Saga. In 2023, The Solana Mobile released the First cryptocurrency mobile phone known as Saga for $1,000. The phone was targeted at customers who wanted to access the Solana blockchain and purchase apps outside the normal ecosystems of the Google and Apple app stores. The Saga phone has partnerships, includes a number of Solana dApps and has a seed vault built-in. Before a large amount of BONK was airdropped to the owners of Saga phones (which was a temporary spike in the values of airdrops, rising above $10,000 for each phone during the peak of BONK values), Saga sales were not the best at all. Purchasing a Saga phone became very risky because you could pay $1,000 for it and potentially make over $10,000. As seen from the viral trigger, Saga is proof that reward tokens can be effective in building demand and driving sales for cryptophones. In addition, the Saga project showed a weakness in that the value-proposition of owning one is diluted due to the value of the tokens. Owners who purchased based on the Airdrops end up with more expensive pieces of equipment than a standard Android phone without many of the essential features that a standard Android phone possesses.&nbsp; Solana Mobile ended the support of the Saga phone in October 2024, two years after it was launched, following numerous complaints of abandoning their early supporters. While the new Seeker phone launched in August 2024 provides additional functionality and includes support for cryptocurrencies, the main issue for Solana Mobile has always been convincing consumers that they can buy this type of phone for their needs when they could simply use regular smartphones to accomplish all of the same tasks. <h2>The Airdrop Farming Reality</h2> The process of using airdrop farming is wasted right after the announcement of SKR. Members of the community were required to make use of the devices, swap wallets to the Seeker Network Protocol (A) use both stake tokens to validators as well as stake their tokens to other community members use dApps and lastly use <a href="https://www.lbank.com/explore/the-rise-of-depin-connecting-blockchain-to-real-world-infra" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">DePIN's Applications</a>. Instead, they sought to obtain the most amount of tokens possible than to perform the functions of the devices that were made available at no cost. In the end, SKR is driven by something different than mobile crypto currency adoption or the overall increase in the ecosystem. Rather, SKR is the result of an airdrop optimized, temporary behavior. A good launch and token appreciation will result in someone reaping a return on investment while the same token has no value. SKR Value - SKR Value will motivate Seeker to "purchase" tokens in this example. What do SKR holders have to say about the utility of SKR? "The token is meant to be useful for purchasing things but very little information is available regarding the value of the token." "What value is to be derived from being a token holder? There is no indication that SKR is intended to be a speculative investment and not an infrastructure to facilitate transactions within the Seeker ecosystem." <h2>The Uncomfortable Math</h2> Unless action is taken to increase the percentage of active investors who stake, active investors are at risk of becoming diluted quickly because new SKR tokens are constantly issued. If this happens, all non-staking investors will be penalized for not participating and rewarded to those staking. If, however, the value of KTM increases enough to compensate, then not staking would be an advantage for active investors. Otherwise, they would incur additional losses. The instant unlock periods make for a very simple comparison with the 12 to 18-month team and lab lock-up periods. The 12-18 month lock-up periods are important for creating stability by preventing sales of insider shares until either 50% of the total supply, or another percentage of supply, has been staked by active investors. The immediate unlocking of 40% of supply and 10% annual inflation in the first year results in many active investors being able to sell many SKR tokens before insiders can sell theirs. The pressure to sell for all active investors will only increase as the number of tokens owned by active investors increases relative to the total supply. <h2>Bentham and the Lévy-Le</h2>How does SKR go from governance and speculation into the next realm? Solana Mobile is positioning itself to create an open mobile environment with creator and user value (not intermediaries such as Apple and Google). With the launch of "Seeker Season," more than 175 applications exist on the Seeker's decentralized application (dApp) store, generating over $100 million in on-chain transactions. More utility can be found through DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network). Hardware functions (sensors/mapping/Distributed Computing) on phones can run applications and allow phone users to be compensated. DePIN works without any reliance on speculation. If Decentralizing Physical Infrastructure Network becomes scalable, it will make staking for Guardian Chain more valuable. Validators will receive paid services for staking to secure the Guardian Chain. Overall, charging to use the service and not requiring a token raises questions about overall viability but staking provides a long-term reward opportunity. Over time, the SKR token has the potential to provide access to high-quality features and functionality like stakeability, token subscription services and micro-transactions for mobile decentralized applications (dApps). These applications show great promise but it is important to keep in mind that there is no assurance of their current adoption. <h2>The Market Timing Problem</h2> The SKR proposal's January 2026 launch will be within a crypto market that is well cooled down relative to the current price levels of BTC since the end of 2024. New Crypto will likely face greater challenges in garnering investor attention and liquidity due to their volatility compared to BTC during the upcoming launches, whereas Saga, in 2023, benefited from a recovery rally. Conversely, SKR will experience a completely different launch environment. In light of the new SKR announcement, Solana has been quite strong, trading between $140 (near-term highs) and $200 (mid-term highs) since that time. Furthermore, as we mentioned in our prior blog posts, the entire ecosystem revolves around the Solana token, and if Solana is performing well, the rest of the ecosystem will also perform well. In addition to the cooling Crypto market, SKR will also face another major risk factor called "Launch Fatigue." Recent market saturation of multiple Governance Tokens encouraging "Stake To Earn" and/or "Ecosystem Expansion" are well established; however, most of these tokens failed to sustain momentum after the initial burst and quickly faded into obscurity. Therefore, regardless of what kind of support your phone has, you must provide tangible value to avoid the same fate as the many other crypto projects that have launched in recent years. <h2>The Hardware Vulnerability Shadow</h2> Less than 24 hours prior to SKR's launch, Ledger revealed an issue with the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset that could grant malicious actors "complete access" to the device. This issue relates to an attack vector that includes electromagnetic fault injection, which allows an attacker to also retrieve the device's cryptographic keys during the initial boot process.&nbsp; Although this issue doesn't originate with Solana Mobile (i.e., it was not Solana Mobile's fault) as other manufacturers are using this same chipset, the important thing is that it reinforces the ongoing problem of how we will adopt crypto-based phones. In this case, the "greater" the focus on securely storing a user's key, the more likely that they will become a target. Current-day phones that are marketed as secure do not typically consider protecting the user's key or allowing them to securely hold a key safe within it. <h2>The Real Question</h2> Is a cryptocurrency phone going to replace token airdrops? The Saga has shown how quickly airdrops can be converted into profit. It seems that Seeker allows for the possibility of enabling users to stake, as well as upgrading hardware and facilitating broader interaction with cryptocurrencies. Airdrop users, in essence, are engaged in staking; therefore, the future of Seeker (and possibly other cryptocurrency phones) will involve empowering and engaging users and encouraging them to take part.&nbsp; There is some controversy regarding token bribery disguised as decentralized governance or a way for an ecosystem of creators and users to be developed. I suspect that the answer will lie between these two extremes. There will likely be speculation surrounding Seeker and increased sales of the Seeker, along with excitement, but whether Seeker can provide long-term value is dependent on the hardware and ecosystems being created for it. Currently, Solana Mobile is following a tried-and-true method to gain attention: production of valuable tokens. In 2026, it will be the responsibility of the market to determine if Solana Mobile's method works.
