TRX is the native utility token of the TRON network, serving as the "gas" for transactions and decentralized applications (dApps). It is used for staking to earn rewards and serves as the foundational layer for transferring stablecoins like USDT. The project was founded by Justin Sun in 2017. While the ecosystem transitioned into a DAO structure in 2021 to promote decentralization, Sun remains its most prominent figure. For users looking to participate in the ecosystem, TRX is available on major global platforms like LBank.
TRON utilizes a unique resource model to manage transaction costs. Bandwidth is required for standard transactions, such as sending TRX or tokens, while Energy is necessary for smart contract interactions, including USDT transfers. Users can obtain these resources by staking their TRX. If an account has sufficient resources, transactions can be processed without fees. However, if the account lacks enough Bandwidth or Energy, a small amount of TRX is automatically burned to cover the transaction costs.
Introduced in early 2025, the "Gas Free" feature is a major update designed to simplify the user experience for retail participants. It allows users to pay their USDT transfer fees directly in USDT instead of requiring them to hold TRX for gas or resources. This move is aimed at lowering the barrier to entry for newcomers who primarily use the network for stablecoin payments, making the onboarding process much more seamless across the TRON ecosystem.
TRON is a dominant force in the stablecoin market, hosting over half of all circulating USDT. The community frequently prefers TRON because it offers significantly faster transaction speeds, with block times of approximately three seconds. Additionally, transaction costs on TRON are substantially lower than those on Ethereum’s Layer 1, making it a more efficient and cost-effective choice for users who need to move stable assets frequently.
TRC-10 is a system-level token standard on the TRON blockchain. It is generally cheaper to issue and transfer but does not support smart contracts, making it suitable for simple token projects. In contrast, TRC-20 is a smart-contract-based standard equivalent to Ethereum's ERC-20. It is used for more complex applications, including USDT and most decentralized apps (dApps), as it allows for programmable logic and deeper integration with the TRON Virtual Machine.
